Deborah Yasinsky creates works that build new realities from a composite of existing ones. Her solo show ”Tapestries of Memory”, on view from Sept 12-Oct 9, 2021 at Empty Set Gallery, presents visitors with an interdisciplinary vision outlining where fiction and fact collide. The exhibit is presented with the support of the NY City Corps artist grant.
Yasinsky’s work on view emphasizes resilience and transformation. A type of alchemy permeates the exhibition. Video projections dance over the surfaces of objects, while nearby paintings show the breadth of Yasinsky’s textured treatment across the surface of these artworks. Abstraction and figuration emerge and conceal themselves again in the picture plane, presenting a tenuous present for the viewer.
Yasinsky’s deft touch and subtle intonations embrace a wealth of material and scale, no small feat given the wealth of works presented in the space. Works reflect the natural world and our place within it, dwelling on our imaginations of mythic creatures and our relationship with the tangible world in equal measure. Yasinsky’s breadth and scope present in these works invite us to delve into our imagination and explore unseen connections that attach us to the world around us in mysterious and surprising ways.
Deborah Yasinsky is a Bronx-based artist, curator, and educator. Recent exhibitions include Coral Gables Museum, Paradice Palase, Local Project Art Space, Dominican University, YU Museum Education Department, and Hot Cabinet. Curatorial projects include, Beast Like Me: Feminism and Fantasy and Listen: Artists Respond to Politics at Bronx Art Space. She is currently the Curator of Education at Lehman College Art Gallery and an Adjunct Lecturer at Lehman College, CUNY.
